...Rivers' reborn soccer career continued on May 10, when he was invited to play in the Britnight Showbiz Soccer Game at the Home Depot Center. Rivers again worked hard to prepare for the grueling match, and lots o' fun was had. Thats Rivers battling Welsh actor Michael Sheen in the photo above.

...New extra track info: The UK edition of the Red Album will contain the same 10 songs as the US edition, plus 2 cover songs: renditions of "Life Is What You Make It" by Talk Talk and "The Weight" by The Band. Out in UK 6/9 (digital), 6/16 (physical).

...New physical Deluxe Edition (CD) info: The (USA) Deluxe CD is now scheduled to come out on 6/3, BUT this is not confirmed - it may instead be the following week. We will know soon. Whats for sure is the deluxe edition comes with the additional 4 tracks in a wicked digipak sleeve with a huge booklet packed with exclusive info and beautiful art.

..."Greatest Man" iTunes single clarification: If you order the single now and want the whole album when it comes out, your iTunes will "know" you have it already, and the rest of the album will cost you a dollar less at that time. And if you already preordered the album on itunes and want the single now, you can do this without paying for it twice - Look in your itunes under "Automated Purchases" and it should show the single there for free download - because you already bought it by doing the presale. Or just go to the single page on iTunes and it should say its free for you. At least this is how iTunes explained it to us.

...Okay, so the 'Pork And Beans' video was shot from last Wednesday to Saturday, with director Matt Cullen and his amazing crew. Everybody involved did such a great job. Words are not really adequate to describe the things I saw those 4 fateful days. Suffice it to say that rules were broken and boundaries were pushed back! This video should be out sometime in the coming weeks. More details as they become available.

...Plug 1: I saw The new film "The Dhamma Brothers" the other day at its L.A. premiere screening. This is the film that Rivers helped out with, about Vipassana meditation in an Alabama prison. Its a really beautiful film, so if you see a screening coming near you, be sure to check it out. It will be in DVD at some point too.

...Plug 2: Super long time weezer fan Justin H. has been making cool music of his own for some years now, and his band Zomo is releasing not one but two new albums. If you are into weezer, you'll probably dig this stuff!

Scott Shriner did an interview with Warwick bass co., in which there is interesting discussion about making the new album, plus lots of other good stuff. Check it out !

A 'Pork and Beans' video will exist pretty soon. And other fun video items should be cropping up here on weezer.com in the coming weeks leading up to the new album release. More info asap.

There's a short but sweet article on Weezer's new album in the new Rolling Stone mag (print edition, dated 5/15).

Weezer as food art: Check out these very cool bento boxes made to look like the Pinkerton and Green Album covers. (scroll down a bit - all the bento rock covers are cool!)

International Release info: Its true that the new album will be released in Japan on 6/18. Why this happens with Japanese releases remains a bit of a mystery. Europe/UK/Australia and so forth we dont have dates yet, but they wont be much different than USA/Canada.

Still waiting for info regarding single formats and single import releases.

Looks like there will be a vinyl edition of the Red Album. No details yet.

in response to some presale questions:
1. The iTunes presale ticket password gets you 1st access to tickets in general. Now, In theory, this could mean access to premium seats - if a venue had any, but this is not guaranteed, and the venues havent even been chosen yet. Usually Weezer shows are GA, so on that case it wouldnt matter. What is guaranteed is 1st access to buying whatever tickets will eventually go on sale - depending on the venue at that time and how the venue operates. Wish I had more specifics, but thats all I got for now.
2. The Pork And Beans 7" b-side: what is it and is it truly exclusive? I Can't reveal the song yet but it is unique from the ones on the standard and deluxe albums and its not either of the 2 itunes bonus songs. Whether this 7" remains the only way to get this song later on is unknown. More info as I learn it.

Welcome to the new weezer.com! It's still in transition, but things should be settled by the time the new album is out. I must say, theres some very talented folks in the weezer fandom world, and they clearly worked hard on this stuff! ...a recent spate of articles broke free recently about the new Weezer album, and a lot of requests have come in for some confirmation. None has been forthcoming so far due to the fact that things are still a bit fluid. But in the interest of not driving fans completely crazy, heres a rundown of what is known and not known:

1. Album release date. This has been reported as being June 17th. This is very likely, however release dates are never truly guaranteed until a week or two before the album arrives. So its probably 6/17, with a small chance of changing.

2. The Album's title. The album has been reported as being self titled, i.e. just called "Weezer" like the Blue and Green albums were. This is also very likely. In fact, as of last Friday, it was technically not possible to change it - unless the release date is changed too. So we can say its very unlikely to change.

3. The Album's theme (color). This has been reported as "The Red Album". This is a strong possibility but it is not for sure. As I understand things, many competing visual ideas are being played off against each other (none of which would affect the self titled aspect), and some are "Red" in style or concept. But whether this ends up as the final theme remains to be seen.

4. First single. Confirmed as being "Pork And Beans". Could this change? Maybe a tiny chance of that. But it is definitely a song on the album (and it is unrelated to the demo song "Pig" that made it onto the internet in '06). As for the release date of this single, this information is TBD, likewise the potential (if any) for "physical" single format(s).

5. Other songs on the album. Many song titles have been kicked around the 'net, including "Everybody Get Dangerous", "Automatic", "Ms. Sweeney", "?" (a '12 letter word starting with T and ending with R'), "I'm the Greatest Man That Ever Lived", "Daydreamer". All are real weezer songs, but none are 100% confirmed as actually being on the album as of this writing.

6. Producer/Mixer. The album was made in 3 phases, produced by Rick Rubin (Malibu, spring '07), Weezer (mostly) (Malibu, summer/fall '07), and Jacknife Lee and Weezer (Santa Monica, early '08), and was mixed by Rich Costey.

Okay, a viewer of the new movie "21" reports seeing a new Weezer song in the credits ("Everybody Get Dangerous"), but didnt hear anything in the film he recalled sounding like weezer. Well, movies are like that. For all we know, its deep in the background somewhere on one scene.

And, for those of you who know about Twitter, Pat Wilson's got one going. All sorts of randomness from the keypad of Wilson here. Who knows what he'll do next?

More info has hit the web about that mysterious Pat Wilson sung song in the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 Prologue game. As we see on this site, the song is called "Automatic (LA Riots remix)" and yes, it's officially a Weezer song. As for what it's a remix of, and whether you will see this (or any mix of it) down the road (or racetrack) on any release...remains to be seen. Also, a longer GT5P trailer is online here.

The album will be out in June so with any luck you will hear a new Weezer song on the radio soon. I think I know which song is the first single but I’m not sure so I can’t tell you. I’ll give you some hints, though. It’s one word, starts with a T, ends with an R and contains twelve letters. You should be able to figure it out because you’re smart li’l Weezer fans.

The album is meaty, crunchy and melodic like a good Weezer album should be.

...Just what are you hearing here? Well, that is indeed Pat Wilson's voice. Thats about all that can be said for sure right now.

...Many letters came in from players of Rock Band (PS2, PS3, XB360), noting mysterious differences in the version of "El Scorcho" thats used in the game. Ive looked into it and still no explanation has surfaced. As people have said: "...The lyrics are slightly differrent ("Come down on the street and dance with me" versus "Come on down on the street and dance with me") and the solo is almost completely different..." "...Matt's backing falsetto vocals are gone, and so is the ICONIC, seminal guitar solo....the entire outro is changed as well! Gone are the group shouts and the boisterous yelling..."

...Speaking of Rock Band, this is pretty funny!

...Rivers' "Alone" album now has a video, for "Blast Off!" This video will be world premiering on Yahoo.com, on their video premieres page (link updated 1/14), this coming Friday, 1/11. Check it out! I think youll get a kick out of it.

speaking of "Alone", heres a recent Billboard.com article in which Rivers says some interesting stuff about his own music and Weezer music. Speaking of Rivers interviews, keep an eye on the 'Alone' podcast page, ther should be more additions soon. And meanwhile, the vinyl LP version of 'Alone" is now out, sightings have been made at several US shops. This is a strictly limited pressing, so if you like the big black discs, get 'em while you can!

Hey folks, today is the day - out NOW on Geffen Records is "Alone: The Home Recordings Of Rivers Cuomo". Its an 18 track collection of Rivers's demos from 1992-2007, including some short "not-really song" clips that are cool too. The CD booklet is totally loaded with very interesting info and liner notes written by Rivers himself. While it's not a weezer album, it is essential to any weezer fan looking to dig a little deeper - and be rewarded!

"Alone" is available wherever good music is sold in stores, digitally on itunes (direct link here - launches iTunes), not to mention Amazon.com and lots of other fine online and digital retailers.

Note that Alone WILL be on vinyl LP, but that format is not out just yet. And news on Alone's availablity and release date in other countries is pending.

And speaking of "Alone", check out this Rivers interview podcast, recorded on 10/15/07. And there will be more to come!

...Meanwhile, in the months leading up to next spring's 6th Weezer album release (yet to be titled despite what some have seen in print), there is other news with weezer members:

...Speaking of Rivers, you probably know that his "Alone" album is in stores next Tuesday 12/18. Due to Amazon.coms preview clip system, you can see the tracklist, and hear the clips of course, on their "Alone" page.

And vinyl lovers, do not fret - this album will be available on a slab o' wax. Not sure when its coming out exactly though. And theres more cool 'Alone' info to come. You know what Myspace page to keep an eye on!

People not in North America, Ive been scanning for info as to when/if "Alone" will be dropping locally for you. Ive seen info that indicated its coming out in January in the UK, but thats not confirmed yet. And I havent gotten word yet about other areas.

...Folks, heads up: the label pushed the release date of "Alone" back one week to December 18. Still in time for the holidays! See above for the cover art, featuring a photo I took of Rivers in 1993 at work in a rehearsal studio. Rivers says "This is a CD of my favorite home demos from ’92 to ’07 featuring a lot of never heard before songs, a few covers, a few songs from my unfinished rock musical "Songs From The Black Hole" and my original demo for “Buddy Holly”". Please note that the final tracklisting of this album will not be released before the album itself. See some more info on this album and the upcoming 6th Weezer album on pp. 32 in Rolling Stone's 40th anniversary issue (see it for free online here).

...Okay, here's a round up of our man Scott Shriner's appearence at the recent "Office Convention" in Scranton, PA, celebrating both the NBC show 'The Office', and lovable Scranton. Scott was invited to guest with the Scrantones, the band responsible for the Office theme song. The Scrantones played in an outdoor booth on Friday, plus a Saturday night indoor gala show with many guests from the show showing off their (often considerable) music talent. Scott had a blast providing bass duties.

Scott says: "The setlist included some dusty classics, some oldies, a couple jazzy numbers and [the theme song and] some other music from the show like "the booze cruise" and stuff like that. Melora [aka Jan, the uptight corporate manager now fired and living with Michael Scott(Steve Carell)] has a cd she did, she's a great singer. And Craig (Darrell the warehouse guy) did Radiohead's "Creep" and Cameo's "Word Up" and "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. We also did a Police song with Brian [aka Kevin, the big accountant whos band on the show is a Police cover band]. [Bizarre, creepy on the show] Creed [actually the very nice real name Creed], was actually in the Grass Roots back in the late 60's so we did "Midnight Confessions" [which Creed originally played on, and was the Grass Roots' biggest hit]. We had to do the Pennsylvania Polka of course. All in all, about 20 songs. Wow..."

Others helping out onstage with Scott at one point or another were the actors who play Stanley, Toby, Angela, Meridith, Phyllis, Oscar, Andy, and Bob Vance.

There were several news stories on the Convention, but this one gets the link because it mentions Scott's contribution.

*Halloween Update* - There's 2 Weezer cover band shows coming up on 10/31...

Cleveland: A band called This Is Exploding will be performing the "Pinkerton" album in its entirely, at the multi-act "Rock-n-Roll HalloWEEN" show at the Beachland Ballroom.

Boston: A band called Beautiful Lies will ALSO be performing (some of? all of?) the "Pinkerton" album, at the Berklee College of Music dining hall, at 10 PM.

*Update 10/24: This coming weekend, our own Scott Shriner will be playing as a guest member of the Scrantones, the band that recorded the theme music for the hit show "The Office"! They will be playing live in Scranton, PA (home of The Office) on the outdoor street stage, during the inaugural "Office Convention", a 3 day affair (10/26-28) designed to promote Scranton to fans of The Office!

Yes folks, as if this event wan't cool enough, here comes Scott to join in with the Scrantones and rock! I wonder how many times they'll be playing that Office theme song?

Scott will be playing with The Scrantones on Saturday afternoon during the street fair, and then Saturday night at an auditorium. All the details (including ticket purchasing) are on the official Office Convention website, and heres a news article about it.

...and more news: on 12/11, a new album titled "Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo" will be released on Geffen Records. The (very cool) tracklist, which was drawn from the full span of Rivers' Weezer years (1992-2007) is still under wraps, but Rivers recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the project. Also see this Pitchfork article, which also refers to the wicked cool book project that Rivers is working on, that will be released at a (much) later time.

...first of all folks, there has been no change in the (cool) weezer situation in the studio - the news from 8/9 (below) is still the latest. If/when theres more to tell, it will be here.

...In the 9/07 issue of Spin magazine, there's an interview with actor turned musician Michael Cera (the skinny one from "Superbad", etc) regarding his band "The Long Goodbye". Michael talks about Weezer being a big influence, saying that "My favorite album of all time is Weezer's Pinkerton". Meanwhile , Cera's band covers 'El Scorcho', and you can hear/see it on their MySpace page.

...A very special kind of "Beverly Hills" video.

...Very cool fan action in Japan: Nami writes "We held an event called the weezer night in Shinjuku, Tokyo in July of this year. This event is the third this time. ...One for the old schoolers and new wavers: The Rentals, led by original Weezer bass player Matt sharp, have been out on tour for a while. On Sept 21 they finish their tour in L.A. at the Henry Ford Theater. The word is out that this tour has really been rocking, so be sure to come on down on 9/21. Info here. Dateline: an undisclosed location in Southern California, deep inside weezer lines. Im sitting in a large room that normally doesnt serve as a place where bands record their albums, watching weezer, well, record their album. But then this band isnt known for doing things normally. And this album, their 6th, is sounding pretty far from 'normal' so far.

There wont be any song titles or other detailed in-progress info in this report, but I can describe the vibe in the room and the sound in the air. The vibe is healthy, full of dialogue, cooperation, forward thinking and interested experimentation. The sound is definitely weezer, but not quite like any weezer I've heard before. Or rather, not like any one style that weezer has ever tried, but a fresh combination with some new flavors on top. It sounds as if the band has grown into a new land that they had previously only skirted around the edges of - a land where arrangements are getting adventurous, where song structures, lengths and feels are given plenty of sunlight and fresh water and allowed to grow into what the songs demand. It sounds really cool. Like an excellent music farm. Or perhaps a food co-op.

The band started this session on Monday July 9 and is scheduled to continue recording here till October. They came into this session with 6 weeks of earlier springtime work under their belts, which yeilded perhaps half of an unfinished album. Now theyve got their sights set on the other half, and all the overdubs and touches the final set of tracks will need to be ready for the world in '08. Based on what I've seen over these past 2 weeks here at Camp Weez, they should have no trouble delivering the goods.

...'Only In Dreams' makes #8 on a list of the top 10 guitar songs ever, as voted on by the likes of Ronnie Wood, Jimmy Page and Andy Summers. Aside from the early 80's Scottish band The Skids, no other modern band made the list, which is mostly stuff like Zep, Beatles and jazz and blues legends. Who knew? (...we did, haha)

...Interview with original weez bass player Matt Sharp, leader of The Rentals, in which he is asked about what it was like being with the original weezer lineup at Rivers's wedding last summer.

...an update on an old mystery: The various versions of "Make Believe". Heres the scoop:
Originally, the album was released (May 10, 2005, contrary to what iTunes says) and that was that. But then it was discovered that there were 2 problems. The wrong version of 'We Are All On Drugs" was included, and there was a minor audio problem in "This Is Such A Pity". (Both of these things were things that the band could hear, but if you hadn't heard the song before, you wouldn't know what was 'wrong'.)
So, early on, a second version of the album was issued with the 'Drugs' and Pity' corrected. Its not known if any of the original copies were returned and destroyed at that point. Theres likely plenty of both of these first two versions out there, as "Make Believe" sold half a million copies in a matter of weeks (and is currently well over 1 million sold).
But then, when it came time for a 3rd single, the band made some changes to "Perfect Situation", changing the "whoa oh" melody and adding the "Perfect Situation" background vocals near the end of the song. This became known as the 'single version' or the 'video version', but the band decided it was better than the original and wanted all further pressings of the album to have this new version instead. So, therefore, a 3rd version of the album was made, and thats the version thats currently on iTunes and in stores (unless they still have very old stock of the CD).
(Thanks to Robert M. for asking some good questions - your suspicions were correct!)

...Shout out to Geoffry I., a Weezer fan who reveals he was behind the original underground versions of Guitar Hero with the various Blue Album Weezer tracks (you might have seen some vids on YouTube about a year ago). Turns out that his independent fun time work got him noticed by Neversoft, who ended up hiring him to work on Guitar Hero 3 - to create the chart for 'My Name Is Jonas"!

...and speaking of, check out this preview video of "Jonas" in GH3. (also here, and here).

...So, just what IS this all about? I honestly haven't a clue.

...It started as a rumor, but it's been confirmed: "My Name Is Jonas" is one of the tracks in the latest greatest version of "Guitar Hero", Guitar Hero 3 for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Its coming out this fall. Get your thumbs ready for some overdriven fingerpickin'! (...but whats up with calling Foghat "Fog Hat"? Little whippersnappers...dont know they classic rock.. grumble grumble..)

..."Beverly Hills" received (some sort of) award at the 2007 BMI Pop Awards. These annual awards "recognize the writers and publishers of the past year’s 50 most performed pop songs from BMI’s catalog of more than 6.5 million compositions.” One would think that this would apply to 2005 not 2006, but so it goes.

...The DVD of Season 2 of the Muppet Show is out on 8/7, and one of the bonus features is "Weezer and The Muppets". The press release says its "More than just [The 'Keep Fishin'] video, see this fun, somewhat new entry into The Muppet Show annals." Maybe they mean the "Gone Fishin'" 4 part behind the scenes thing?

...Rivers has been named as a "potential inductee" for a proposed Connecticut music hall of fame.

...whatever happened to alternative radio? As things shift into the ever more homogenous 'top 40' world, most popular radio formats have been getting mashed together. These days, bands from Nirvana to Coldplay are going up against Fergie and such, or getting mushed into what passes for "Classic Rock" these days. The heyday of "Modern Rock" seems to have been about 1992 - 2000. Where are the indie stations with an identity? Why cant every city support a killer station like Indie 103?
This story is now all too familiar: "...recently Minnesota's Alt Rock station, Drive 105, went off the air and/or switched formats to the extremely cheesey, extremely dissapointing Love 105...the last song the station played was "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer..."

Recent FCC rules changes will all but wipe out most online radio stations and force the few that remain to get all homogenous and boring like most regular stations have gotten. ...which is not to say nothing's happening. Brian B. of Ohio State University reports on a unique interview that Rivers gave to his class recently, almost out of the blue. "...Last quarter I was fortunate enough to take English 560 with Professor Renker. Somehow, she must have gotten in contact with Rivers, and he responded. In turn, an interview was setup where our class got to interview Rivers via webcam. The class focused on interpreting song lyrics and poetry with thematic similarities. We actually analyzed 4 or 5 Weezer songs ("undone," "across the sea," "beverly hills," "island in the sun," etc.) so it was amazing to be able to talk about this with Rivers. He was an incredibly nice guy, and being a Weezer fan for 15 years now, it was incredible that he would be so kind to give our class (roughly 20 people) this opportunity. The interview was at 9:30 E.T., so Rivers was up quite early being on the West coast. The interview lasted about an hour and a half and was recorded, and I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it will be available somewhere on the English Department website at www.osu.edu." [FYI: haven't been able to find this yet on the OSU website.]

...1/29 update: Mtv viewers, listen for Weezer's "Beverly Hills" tonight on MTV's 'The Hills'. The show airs at 10pm EST.

..."Factory Girl" is finally out in limited release, and the word is in that Brian and Pat do make it on screen breifly (as Lou Reed and John Cale - see todays photo (full size) for a still [thanks to Sean for the pic]), but their cover of the Velvet Underground's "Heroin" is not in the film. Major bummer! The film it self is getting some fair reviews, some comparing it to 'Almost Famous' and 'I Shot Andy Warhol', but many saying it lacked authentic flavor of the 60's. Well, of course now the REAL question is "will there be a soundtrack CD - and will Brian and Pat's cool version of "Heroin" be on it?". At the very least it should be an extra on the DVD when it's released. Guess we'll have to see. Thanks to Greg from Weerez.com for on the spot reportage.

...2007: definitely more weez than 2006. Well, that's the smell of it so far, IMHO.

...weez fandom proceeds apace, even as the band has been quiet: A young fan (thanks to dad Mike S.), Goat Punishment tattoo (thanks to Ron), a junglistic weez-fan cover insertion (by Kevin K.), from Kansas City a report that "96.5 The Buzz is doing a "My List Mornings" where listeners submit their top 10 songs to be played for the morning show and about 90% of them have at least one Weezer song in them, spanning every album and not just the singles." (thanks to Kris), and an odd report from Canada: "MuchMusic is running its top 100 videos today. Weezer's "Island In The Sun" came in at #77. A short clip of Rivers runs right after." ...I've been asked "why hasnt the Weezer Wikipedia page been updated?" The answer: I dont know - Wikipedia is open for everyone to participate and edit. If youve got facts its missing, go plug 'em in! (It looks pretty solid to me, as of 1/20/07...)
